The Planning Department is responsible for the planned and sustainable development of the city. Its work includes preparing master plans for city growth, planning residential, commercial, industrial, and green zones, and controlling orderly urban expansion.
The department undertakes land use planning by allocating land for housing, roads, markets, schools, hospitals, parks, and open spaces while preventing unauthorized land use.
It plans major urban infrastructure such as roads and transport systems, water supply, drainage, sewerage.
The department is also involved in housing and slum development through affordable housing schemes, slum redevelopment, and rehabilitation projects to improve living conditions.
It handles transport and traffic planning, including road widening, public transport planning, parking management, and traffic congestion reduction. Another key function is scrutiny and approval of building plans to ensure compliance with building by-laws, setbacks, height limits, and safety norms.
The department implements digital planning, and GIS mapping. Survey and mapping activities such as land surveys, GIS and satellite mapping, and updating city records are carried out regularly.
In addition, the department implements government urban policies, development control regulations, and town planning acts, monitors and controls illegal constructions, supports enforcement activities, and coordinates with the public by addressing complaints, providing planning guidance, and conducting public consultations.
